A local community actor/director is hosting a karaoke fundraiser that will benefit Nashville CARES on January 20.

Matt Smith, who you may recognize from last year's production of The Normal Heart — and who is currently producing ACT 1 Theatre's upcoming production of The Flu Seaons — was invited to host one of the "featured singer" karaoke nights at Blue Gene's, and thought it an opportune time to also raise some funds for Nashville CARES.

"I've worked with them in the past," he said, "hosting Dining Out for Life events and delivering food to homebound clients. They do so much for so many."

According to Smith, this fundraiser is a "one-time thing." There will be no cover charge, just an opportunity for everyone present to donate as much as they want.

"We'll put out a tip jar and signage and talk about Nashville CARES at the event. All tips will go to them," he said.

Blue Gene's "featured singer" nights occur on Wednesdays to complement the work of longtime Blue Gene's "KJ" Steve Mogck. Matt Smith's turn to visit and host the evening will be on January 20.
