Hyman named director of VUMC operating rooms

Steve A. Hyman, M.D., an associate professor of Clinical Anesthesiology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, has been named medical director of Medical Center East operating rooms at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Hyman, an anesthesiologist board certified in anesthesia and critical care medicine, has been affiliated with Vanderbilt since 1979. He is the partner of Mark Lee Tayor of Nashville.

A native of Converse, Ind., Hyman received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Indiana University and completed his residency at VUMC where he was chosen chief resident in anesthesiology.

Hyman’s previous appointments at VUMC include more than four years as the associate medical director of the Neurological Care Unit.

"I am proud to have someone with Dr. Hyman’s experience and qualifications assume this important role at Vanderbilt,” said Michael S. Higgins, M.D., M.P.H., chair of the Department of Anesthesiology.

In addition to his appointments at VUMC, Hyman is the former chief of anesthesia for Nashville’s Miller Medical Group and Edgefield Hospital, where he held concurrent medical staff leadership positions in ambulatory surgery, respiratory therapy and intensive care. Hyman was also chief of anesthesiology and pain management at Nashville Memorial Hospital for more than two years and has served as a staff anesthesiologist at Skyline Medical Center in Nashville and NorthCrest Medical Center in Springfield, Tenn.

An accomplished pianist since early childhood, Hyman practiced medicine part time after 1999 in order to pursue a Master of Music degree. He focused on piano performance and was inducted into Pi Kappa Lambda, a national music honor society. Hyman graduated from Nashville’s Belmont University School of Music in April 2004 and resumes the full-time practice of medicine at VUMC with this appointment.

Hyman is a published author and has conducted numerous research projects. He is a member of several professional organizations including the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the Tennessee Society of Anesthesiologists and the College Music Society.
