Bud East has watched with amazement as friends have shed weight thanks to the familiar Weight Watchers program. And then he thought, "wouldn’t it be great if we could meet with other gay people trying to lose weight."
And with that, East has spearheaded a new gay and lesbian Weight Watchers group, one that will meet on Mondays at Red Restaurant at 5:30 p.m.
East is collecting money and names to insure that he has the minimum number to form a new group. An informational meeting was held at Red on Monday, Jan. 15 and seven people came. East said he needs 15 to 20 to form the new group.
Cost to join is $120.00 for new members. $100.00 for lifetime members. The program will consist of 10 weeks.
"Red is closed on Mondays, so we have the perfect place to meet," East said.
East is a manager at Tribe and Red.
Participants will attend meetings once a week. Meetings normally last less than an hour. Each week you have a confidential weigh-in to help you track your progress. You learn how to make wise choices, eat healthy and enjoy food and exercise.
"They will teach you how to eat in a way that will keep your weight off," East said. "They have two different programs. Flex system that allows you to count points, and the Core system that allows you to eat certain selective foods."
East said anyone can join the group at any time, with a prorated amount if started in the middle of the session.
"But I have to get everybody on board by Wednesday," he added. "This will provide a very supportive environment," East said.
