I am honored to welcome you to the 2007 Nashville Pride Festival!
We have an incredible Pride Festival and Parade this year – more than 120 vendors and sponsors, live entertainment and parade floats and marchers galore. Last year, approximately 15,000 people attended the Festival and we hope for even higher attendance this year. With the community’s help, we raised nearly $25,000 in sponsorships and donations this year – all of which directly benefit the Pride Festival and the Youth Scholarship Program. I know I speak for everyone involved with Nashville Pride when I extend a very sincere thank you to all our volunteers, sponsors, vendors, donors, and performers!
I am always amazed at how Nashville’s GLBT community has expanded since our first Pride nineteen years ago. In those days, we had 150 or 200 people, marching bravely down the street, being harassed constantly but still walking on. We may have grown in numbers, but some things remain the same. Each year at Pride, we celebrate our community and our differences and diversities within our that community.
Free to be ME is the theme of the 2007 PrideFest, and it describes the feeling we all should carry with us each and every day and not just one day of the year.
I invite all of you to join in celebrating PrideFest 2007 and in renewing our commitment to be yourself. I also encourage you to learn more about the issues facing us – and get involved. We’ve come a long way since our first Pride – but we’re not done yet!
