Recently, the local tourism and hospitality industry was pleasantly surprised to learn that Nashville had been named to the "Most Surprising Gay-Friendly Destinations" list at this year’s PlanetOut Travel Awards.  The PlanetOut Travel Awards are determined by a panel of GLBT travel experts with input from the memberships of Gay.com and PlanetOut.com. Other cities on the list include: Bologna, Italy; Sao Paulo, Brazil and Cardiff, Wales.

Nashville’s ‘progressive feel’ and emerging downtown scene were cited as reasons for the city’s recognition.  The award can also be traced back to efforts of the Nashville Convention and Visitors Bureau to include GLBT travel writers in their various press activities.  This has led to a series of positive articles in the gay press and an increased desire to feature Music City in different GLBT-focused publications.
