The Nashville Grizzlies gay rugby team kicked off its Spring 2017 season in Memphis on February 25 with a 37-31 victory against the Dry Gulch Renegades. The victory in West Tennessee puts the Grizzlies’ record at 12-3, the best ever in team history.

The game was a nail biter. The score was 27-31 in the second half before the Grizzlies came from behind and scored two unanswered tries. The final try was a dramatic one with Colt Woods exploiting a hole in the Renegade’s defense and making a last second pass to Cori Crawford who carried the ball into the tryzone under the uprights.

That try was Cori’s third of the game. Michael Moore and Chris Ursery also scored tries earlier. Morgan Melton kicked the only Grizzly conversion of the game.

The team has made a major push in training players in new positions and this game bore the fruit of that effort. Jay started a game as flyhalf for the first time and other players also played in new positions.

"The team has been pushing beyond its comfort zone. Players are in unfamiliar positions and thriving in them," said Jimmy Arredondo, head coach.

The men of the match were Aaron Moore (who also played flyhalf), Josh Barnes and Jay.

The Grizzlies will play the Charlotte Royals gay rugby team this Saturday at 12:00 pm. The game will be played at the Nash Bash rugby fields in Donelson (2131 Lebanon Pike) with a third half social to follow at Stirrup. Follow signs at the fields for parking. The team currently practices at the Vanderbilt intramural fields (25th Ave S and Children’s Way) on Tuesdays and Thursday's from 7:00-9:00 pm.
