The Nashville Grizzlies gay rugby team lost to the Hopkinsville Headhunters 22-15 this Saturday, March 17. This was the second away game of the Spring 2017 season and was the season’s first loss.
The Grizzlies and Headhunters have been frequent opponents over the years and this game was the closest the Grizzlies ever came to beating them. The Headhunters play in Division II and are one of the few non-Division III teams the Grizzlies regularly play in the True South regional union. Previously, the closest score in a Headhunters-Grizzly match was last Fall when the Grizzlies lost 55-10.
Tries were scored by Cori Crawford, TC Smoots and Tavarus Taylor. No tries were converted.
“We are obviously disappointed with the loss but the fact that we were competitive for the entire game is something the entire coaching staff is proud of,” said Jimmy Arredondo, head coach.
“Playing a strong team like the Headhunters will give us the preparation we need to compete in our tournaments in St. Louis and Philadelphia later in the Spring season,” he added.
The coaching staff awarded the ‘Back of the Match’ award to Dalton Slattery, the ‘Forward of the Match’ award to Rob Culclasure and the ‘Man of the Match’ to Sammy. This was the second week in a row that Dalton was recognized by the coaching staff; last week he received ‘Rookie of the Match.’
The Grizzlies’ next fundraiser is a Beer Bust at Tribe on March 24 from 8-11 pm. The Grizzlies’ next game is a round robin tournament on April 15 in St. Louis with the St. Louis Crusaders and the Chicago Dragons.
