Nashville GLBT Chamber of Commerce hiring for executive director

To expand its reach within Nashville’s business community, the Nashville GLBT Chamber of Commerce (NGLBTCC) is currently seeking a full-time executive director who will oversee the organization’s day-to-day operations.

The NGLBTCC has created this role to further advance its mission of offering educational programming and networking opportunities for the membership.

"I am thrilled the current board of directors has chosen to take this important step," says John Wade, former NGLBTCC president and leader of the hiring committee. "It is a leap of faith and probably one that is a bit scary for some. However, many of our sister organizations around the country have taken the leap with less financial security but with the right people in leadership have been quite successful in growing their Chambers, not only in numbers but influence in their communities."

The NGLBTCC, Tennessee’s first gay and lesbian professional networking group, was founded in 1998 as a professional networking group originally called the Nashville Association of Professional Persons (NAPP).

In January 2007, the board of directors officially changed the name to the Nashville GLBT Chamber of Commerce, and began saving funds to support the development of a full-time position. 

"The idea of the NGLBTCC needing a full-time executive director was first mentioned to the membership by former president Chris Sanders as he stepped down to become President of the Board for TEP (Tennessee Equality Project)," Wade says. "I shared Chris’s vision and concern that managing and maintaining rapid growth would necessitate making the leap from an all-volunteer organization to one with a full time staff person."

As the NGLBTCC’s first full-time staff member, the executive director will supervise a full slate of activities and serve as a leader in partnership development and membership recruitment. Until now, these tasks have been performed by a group of dedicated volunteers.

"I know the Board and our members have experienced shared frustrations over the years. As a volunteer organization, we simply have not been able to consistently improve on value for our members," Wade says. "Growth, excitement and interest plateaued and we got further behind as member expectations increased. But I believe the current Board has acted at a critical time and will prove to be a wise move."

The Nashville GLBT Chamber of Commerce, a diverse and vibrant business membership organization, seeks well organized, self-motivated candidates for the role of full-time Executive Director. 

Primary job responsibilities include:

  • Oversight and execution of day to day operations of the organization
  • Membership recruitment and retention
  • Corporate partnership development
  • Member event calendar development
  • Recruitment and oversight of volunteers
  • Development and execution of annual fundraiser

Ideal candidates will possess the following experience/characteristics:

  • Prior experience supervising employees/team management
  • Prior work with a not for profit or record of significant volunteer experience
  • Ability to work independently and successfully manage multiple responsibilities

 Compensation – base plus incentive schedule
