Knoxville’s Star 102.1 asking if listeners had to prove that they are not gay

KNOXVILLE – On Tuesday, February 8, 2005, the Marc and Kim in the morning show on 102.1 FM will ask their listeners if they have ever had to prove that they are not gay.

Some local GLBT community members are concerned that asking this question in the format of this show will promote intolerance toward gays in our area. Their fears are grounded in the knowledge of how this particular show has dealt with various past topics. The fear is that hate speech will ensue from the show, encouraging further bigotry toward gays.

“This kind of radio program builds intolerance for our gay community. This is just something we can’t stand for,” declares Chad Walker, local organizer of the Human Rights Campaign Meet-up. Walker also organized the local Stonewall Democrats for Kerry during the last presidential election.

Walker urges area GLBT community members to call the station and express their disapproval of tomorrow’s program.

Other community members have been making their objections heard online and promise to call the show tomorrow morning if the radio staff proceeds with the current planned question.
