The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation has begun it annual awards cycle, giving multiple honors at a March 14 ceremony in New York and prepping for additional events in Los Angeles and San Francisco.
New York honorees included comedienne and talk-show host Joy Behar, who received the Excellence in Media Award, and actress Cynthia Nixon, who received the Vito Russo award, named for one of the founding members of GLAAD and author of The Celluloid Closet. The Los Angeles event, set for April 17, will honor actress and comedienne Wanda Sykes, who will take home the Stephen F. Kolzak Award, and actress Drew Barrymore, who has been tapped to receive the Vanguard Award. Mississippi teenager Constance McMillen, who made news for being refused permission to attend her prom with her girlfriend (which led to the event’s cancellation), will attend the event, which also features a performance by Adam Lambert. The San Francisco ceremonies round out this year’s events, and will include the presentation of the Golden Gate Award to actress and singer Cybill Shepherd, and the Local Hero Award to Robert Hanson, president of Levi Strauss Americas. For more information, click here.
