The Davidson County Democratic Party’s Executive Committee will soon have an openly-gay member, thanks to Shane Burkett’s unopposed run in District 12.
Burkett, who owns and operates marketing and design firm SBResults, LLC, with partner Lane Scoggin, threw his hat in the ring upon learning that longtime committee member Ed Grubbs would be retiring.
Having previously sought the Nashville Metro Council seat from the district, he says he knows the area well and can work to strengthen the party’s presence there.
“I’d met a lot of the committee people when I was running for council, and so when Ed said he wanted to retire my name was brought up by some of them,” Burkett said. “It’s great to be recommended by your predecessor this way, and so when they told me to go and pick up a nominating petition I decided to do just that.”
The Davidson County Democratic Party is rather unique in that it asks its committee members to run on the general ballot; the GOP counterpart chooses its own members. Burkett said this allows for more community representation, although, with the Feb. 12 qualifying deadline past, it also means that he’s running unopposed and won’t have to campaign too heavily.
“If no one ran, then the seat would be vacant,” he said. “And this way I’m allowed to get out and start meeting people, and to facilitate some conversations on why I’m running for the seat, and to see what we can do about getting other candidates moving in this district.”
The committee position has a term of two years. For more information on the organization, visit davidsondemocrats.com.
