A push to limit adoption in Tennessee to only couples who are married is moving forward in the state Legislature.

The bill would ban unmarried heterosexual couples and homosexual couples from adopting.

Children’s advocates said any proposal limiting adoptions is upsetting, especially since there are more than 300 children in state custody waiting to be adopted.

One of the co-sponsors of the bill said he simply wants to stop unmarried couples from petitioning together to adopt a child.
